Mara Expedition Camp Review
Driving up to Mara Expedition Camp, the structures blend in so well with the surrounding grove of acacia trees that you would hardly know a camp was there at all. As Part of Great Plains Conservation, and sister camp to the nearby Mara Plains Camp, Mara Expedition offers a simplified safari experience that allows guests to feel fully immersed in the surrounding Masai Mara.
The property is reminiscent of classic safari camps: large leather armchairs, brass furnishings deep red accents in the common areas and raised, expedition-style canvas tents.
While the accommodations are understated, they are well done, with an airy feel and all the essentials needed for a comfortable few days in the bush. The camp itself is cozy, with just five one-bed canvas tents and one 2-bedroom family tent. Each tent has a private bathroom and shower with hot running water, all just a few steps away from the communal lounge area. As with all Great Plains camps in Kenya, WiFi is available in the bedroom tents but not in the common areas (this helps to maintain a social and electronics-free environment in the public spaces).
Perhaps the biggest draw to Mara Expedition is the opportunity to visit the Masai Mara National Reserve, a bucket list item for many and known for its incredible game viewing—especially big cats. While the National Reserve can get quite busy in peak season and is strictly regulated (vehicles must stick to the roads and return to the camp by sundown), Mara Expedition’s guests have the added benefit of visiting the Mara North Conservancy as well. This offers more exclusivity (read: fewer vehicles) and the freedom of off-road driving. In addition to game drives, guests can enjoy hot air balloon rides, picnic breakfasts and local cultural activities.
