Few countries in the world stimulate the five senses in such a vibrant way as does India. Given the country’s size, complexity and varied terrain and experiences, it can be daunting to start planning a trip there, but Indagare has over a decade of experience crafting itineraries and personally traveling to the great subcontinent.

  • Iconic India

    Iconic India

Indagare Insider and author Fiona Caulfield wrote: “India takes time. You can fall in lust in a flurry but true love takes time.” Whether in the historical capital of Delhi or a small village in the Aravalli Hills, Indagare’s local guides and diverse team of experts can elevate your experience in India from mere tourism to profound cultural immersion.

    • When to Go

Winter in the Northern Hemisphere (November through March) is the best time to travel to most parts of India. This is the cool, dry season in Rajasthan, which is where first-time travelers are typically headed. That said, late September and October offer fabulous weather—dry and cool post-monsoon rains.

    • Ideal Length of Stay

      10 days

    • Itinerary Highlights

Touring Old and New Delhi by rickshaw, seeing the sun rise over the Taj Mahal, tracking tigers in Ranthambore, shopping for gems and textiles in Jaipur, boat rides on the lake in Udaipur.

    • Days 1-2: Delhi

Accompanied by a local guide, discover Old Delhi (the capital of Muslim India between the 17th and 19th centuries, which is filled with mosques, monuments and forts) and New Delhi (created by the British as the capital of India in the 19th century by Sir Edwin Lutyens, that boasts wide avenues, plenty of parks and colonial buildings with spacious gardens).

    • Day 3: Agra

A 3-½ hour drive from Dehli, Agra is an absolute must for first-time travelers to India. Most tourists come for just the day and don’t get to see the Taj Mahal at its best time–either at sunrise or sunset. By staying overnight, you’ll get to see both, with smaller crowds.

    • Days 4-7: Ranthambore National Park

From Agra, travel southwest by chauffeured vehicle to Ranthambore National Park, home to the Bengal tiger. The twice-daily game drives to see this magnificent creature are the main draw of coming here, but the luxurious tented camps located outside the park are destinations in their own right.

    • Days 7-10: Jaipur

In the so-called “Pink City” of Jaipur, India’s first planned city, visit City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal with a private guide. An hour away, the Amber Fort is home to a maze of passages, corridors, pavilions, ornamental gardens and ramparts. Jaipur is ground zero for crafts and commerce in Rajasthan, so no visit would be complete without a shopping expedition accompanied by a savvy local guide who can take you behind-the-scenes.

    • Days 10-12: Udaipur

Attractions in Udaipur, the enchanting “City of Dawn,” include the City Palace, built in 1725; Saheliyon Ki Bari (the Garden of Maids of Honour), a small ornamental garden containing a lotus pool, gushing fountains, beautiful black marble kiosks and bougainvillea; and the beautiful Jagdish Temple, which is still in use today.
