Udaipur

Known as the “City of Lakes” or “Venice of the East,” Udaipur is located in the Indian state of Rajasthan, 250 miles southwest of Jaipur. Founded in 1559, Udaipur was the historic capital of the former kingdom of Mewar, famous for fending off Mughal invaders for several centuries. Apart from its unique natural beauty – lakes, mountains and deciduous forest – Udaipur retained a great deal of Hindu influence and architecture, which is rare in Northern India.

    Essential Udaipur

Experience Udaipur with a customized itinerary that includes guided touring, private dinners and cooking classes with locals. Here is just one example of what our destination experts can create for you.

    • Day 1: Historic Udaipur

After breakfast at your hotel terrace, head out on a guided tour of Udaipur’s most important historic sites. City Palace, home to the Maharanas of Udaipur, was built over three centuries and is a series of four interconnecting palaces, illustrative of various architectural styles. Afterwards, visit the Maharaja’s private Vintage Car Museum and the interesting Crystal Gallery, which belongs to the royal family.

    • Day 2: Old City

Spend your second day in Udaipur taking a guided walk in the old city where shops sell a variety of wares, unexpected folk art decorates the walls of houses and small architectural gems dot the streets. Afterwards, enjoy a sunset boat ride on the lake before dinner at your hotel.

    • Day 3: Leisurely Udaipur

Today, Indagare can arrange a variety of activities that suit your particular interests. History buffs can visit a variety of nearby temples, such as Jagdish and Ranakpur Temples; active types can bike around the spectacular lake or set sail on a boat excursion; and those interested in cooking can prepare northern Indian specialties with a local family. In the afternoon, relax poolside at your hotel.

Indagare's Eliza Scott Harris
“The Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur is a white marble confection built for a Maharanah that appears to float on the lake like something out of a storybook. At night, the staff lights hundreds of lanterns and candles in the turrets and on the rooftop.”
