travel to Japan

Iconic Japan

Steeped in a reverence for tradition and appreciation for detail, Japan seamlessly fuses the historic with the futuristic. The offerings for a culturally curious traveler are astounding—from crafts, fashion and food to history, religion and architecture (Japan has more buildings by Pritzker Prize award-winning architects than any other country in the world). This trip offers an insider’s view of this complex and layered destination, with ample time to experience the very best of Tokyo and Kyoto, along with the mountainous region of Hakone that lies between the two cities.

What to Expect

Highlights and special experiences:

Explore Tokyo through its neighborhoods, museums and sites. Take in the city’s most important Shinto temple, the Meiji Shrine, with an expert guide, along with dynamic districts like Omotesandō, Aoyama, Ginza, Roppongi and Harajuki. See the city through the eyes of fashion designer Tomo Koizumi, who will guide you through one of Tokyo’s edgiest department stores, and enjoy private tours of such cutting-edge art galleries and digital collectives as the Mori Art Museum, 21_21 Design Sight, the National Art Center, the Aoyama and Nezu Museum and TeamLab.

Immerse yourself in the beauty of Japanese culture through a sake tasting, incense workshop and delicious meals—from yakitori and sushi to soba noodles and teppanyaki—plus time at the onsen, a private meditation with a Buddhist monk and much more.

Experience the fusion of nature, art and architecture, while wandering Hakone’s open-air sculpture park and the Enoura Obervatory. Get a taste of Japanese ryokan life with an unforgettable night at the Indagare-adored Gōra Kadan.

See the Saihoji Moss Garden in Kyoto with special access and visit a small but unique museum in the former studio of a famous ceramicist Kawai Kanjirō. Explore the Arashiyama district and take a rickshaw ride through bamboo forests followed by a boat ride with impressive mountain views.
