Peru

Peru is a country of vast variety: topography, cultures, flora and fauna. The history of the country is incredibly rich, and while Machu Picchu remains the country’s major draw, travelers should also spend time in Cusco, Lima and along the Amazon River, one of the most biologically diverse areas on Earth.

    • When to Go

June, July and August are the best months to visit the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, and also the rain forest; the coast, however, is permeated by a light fog called between April and November. December through March is the sunniest season in Lima but the rainiest along the Inca Trail.

    • Ideal Length of Stay

      7-14 Days

    • Itinerary Highlights

Touring Incan ruins, cooking classes in Lima, mountain biking and hiking in the Sacred Valley, seeing the sun rise at Machu Pichu, cultural exploration in Cusco

    • Day 1-2

Acclimate to Peruvian life with a tour of Lima, a culinary mecca, with a master chef. Visit a Surquillo market to learn about the origins of Peruvian food and the country’s local produce, before preparing a variety of Peruvian dishes, like ceviche. Later, visit the historic center of Lima and amble through the upscale neighborhood of San Isidro and the coastal district of Miraflores.

    • Day 3-6

Begin your journey to Machu Picchu in the Sacred Valley, a lush destination that boasts Incan ruins, artisan markets and a great landscape for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, ATVing and kayaking. Take the train to Machu Picchu (with the option to disembark early and hike the end of the Inca Trail) and explore the citadel with one of our specialist guides, and stay after the crowds have left to watch the sun set. Take the famous Hiram Bingham train to Cusco after a sunrise hike.

    • Day 7-10

Begin your visit to Cusco with a private walking tour of the city’s historic Incan walls before visiting the San Blas neighborhood and the Pre-Columbian Art Museum. Stop for lunch at one of our favorite restaurants overlooking the main square. Explore the outskirts of the city, including the Incan walled complex of Sacsayhuaman, the pink rocks of Puca Pucara, Quenko and Tambomachay, commonly referred to as the Incan baths.

    • Day 11-14

After hitting the classic Peruvian destinations, consider spending a few days on a luxury cruise liner on the Amazon river or at a luxe hotel on the shores of Lake Titicaca, which offers an incredible setting and the chance to interact with the indigenous communities that live on manmade islands constructed entirely of reeds.
